AWAKENING DEMOCRACY: CLIMATE CHANGE AND ACTIVISM

Environmental activism has a long history in the United States, including the first Earth Day of 1970, which led to almost all of the important U.S. environmental statutes. However, current debates about climate change have led to a tremendous growth of activism from several different sectors to protect these regulations. States and cities, lawyers and scientists are at the forefront of this movement. Professor Gerrard will discuss this recent evolution and the development of new legal theories.

Michael B. Gerrard is Andrew Sabin Professor of Professional Practice at Columbia Law School, where he teaches courses on environmental and energy law and directs the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law. He is also Chair of the Faculty of Columbia’s Earth Institute.

He is invited by Marta Torre-Schaub, Senior Professor Fellow at the National Center of Scientific Research (CNRS) and Environmental Law Professor Fellow at the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. She is the founder and director of the International Network Law and Climate Change (Droit et changement climatique).

The conference will be in English.
